Sometimes, you’ve read so much and learned so much that you know exactly what other people need to do in every situation. You can give advice, you can teach, but you, yourself, can slide into a complete and utter mess.

This applies to me.

There are days I can literally feel the wheels coming off of my mind. Today, like other days, I started looking for a reason. Then the teacher part of my mind said to myself “You don’t need a reason. There doesn’t have to be a reason. You can just feel bad.”

I can?

“Yes. You don’t need to know the reason. Just know you’re upset and work to accept that and heal yourself. Try to refocus your mind. Meditate. Do some yoga poses. Breathe for 5 minutes. Get up. Take a short walk. Listen to calming music.”

I tell other people to do that.

“Why don’t you take your own advice?”

I’m too busy trying to figure out the “Why?” of how I’m feeling.

“Well, you need to practice what you preach.”

I know I do, but it’s hard.

“Write about this. If you give your advice to someone else, it always ‘sounds’ simple, but it’s hard for them too. It’s hard for anyone to stop looking for the “Why?” and look for the emotional First Aid kit instead. If you deeply cut your finger, you wouldn’t walk around for 2 days wondering how you did it, you’d clean the wound and put a bandaid on it first and then try to piece together what happened. You think clearer when you’re NOT in crisis.”

Hmmm… You’re right about that. If I physically hurt myself, I would do triage, stabilize things and then work out the next step.

“Why wouldn’t you do that for your emotional self? Over thinking and over analyzing just keeps digging into the wound, making it hurt more, making it deeper.”

I’m going meditate for 5 minutes and then get a latte and two cookies.

“That’s OK… for today… You’re on the path to not use food to heal wounds. You’re on a path to learn how to heal yourself because you care about yourself. Replace food with meditation. You’re feeding an emptiness that you may realize isn’t really there.”

That seems like a long way off.

“It may be, it may not be. Stop looking for certainty. Start looking for life.”

OK. Thanks.

“No problem.”
